Note from the Editor:
After 12 months of conversations with a host of fantastic organisations, we are thrilled to launch the collaborative Social Rent Housing at Pace Playbook. The Playbook draws on the collective wisdom, insight and case studies from over 25 contributing authors, and more than sixty organisations. This Playbook is not only a call to action, but a powerful demonstration that between us we’ve got all the resources we need to start eliminating the deficit in our social rent housing supply.
The negative impact of the housing emergency is widely reported and keenly understood, particularly by local authorities who are being crippled by the costs of providing emergency 'temporary’ accommodation for vulnerable households at risk of homelessness. We all agree that we must build more high-quality, low-carbon social homes.
Delivering new homes is hard at the best of times, and perhaps the prospect of innovating and partnering to enable a step-change in social housing delivery is daunting! However, the Playbook is here to help to unlock action. It outlines an ecosystem solution and a route map for incubating scalable solutions and activating an additional new housing delivery mechanism.
Project-level innovation is invariably complicated, but we must embrace the additional complexity to usher in essential system transformation. The innovative projects in this Playbook deliver new life-transforming homes and wider societal outcomes, including new green jobs and skills, and help us develop world-class industrialised construction capabilities.
Unashamedly hopeful, this Playbook is not pie in the sky, but a compilation of real-world project case studies, social-technological solutions and examples of organisational leadership.
Please get in touch if you have further examples, or feel inspired and ready to roll up your sleeves! We would love to hear from you.
