Update from Housing Festival

Note from the Editor:

Last Thursday evening we were chuffed to launch the New Homes in New Ways exhibition, which we have co-curated with the Building Centre in their fabulous public gallery on Store Street, London.

Shining a light on the UK’s deficit of social rent homes and the growing temporary accommodation crisis, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey from despair to hope.

It encourages everyone to reflect on the extremely difficult and harmful experience of living in poor quality temporary accommodation, and the broader societal impacts (and costs) of miserable, unhealthy and insecure housing.

But the exhibition does not stop there. Thanks to the inspiring work of the numerous partners and others, we have been able to set this heartbreaking situation, against a host of fantastic case-studies, expert talking heads and full scale installations, which collectively demonstrate that between us we have the resources, creativity and skills to deliver the high-quality and genuinely affordable new homes we need - today.

I can only attribute the buzz on the evening to the recognition that collectively we have the opportunity and agency to unlock a wave of new social rent homes, at a scale not seen in this country in decades. We hope the optimism and energy provoked by this event will help stimulate bold leadership and galvanise collective action to unlock housing delivery and end child homelessness in the UK.

You can listen to Jez Sweetland’s provocative and motivating speech, here.

The New Homes in New Ways exhibition, is open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday at the Building Centre until 21st February. If you are in central London, do drop in and take a look for yourselves. A digital walk-through will be made available soon.

And the Festival continues...
