Sixty-One Update

I'm delighted to share our 2024 impact report with you! More than a report, it's testament to the power of partnership and the tangible difference we're making together in Bristol.

We invite you to read the the full report here  – it's an inspiring read that showcases the collective impact we've achieved.

Whether it's the connection between a mentor and mentee, the generosity of local church and community in providing gifts for our four local prisons, inspiring and enabling local community to provide safe community spaces for prison-leavers or linking arms with key leaders and individuals across the city to rehabilitate people in and outside of prison – none of it would be possible without your support.

From all of us at Sixty-One, a huge thank you for every way you've partnered with us over this past year. We look forward to continuing this vital work with you.

A Community Allotment Project

Needs You!

We're excited to share a new initiative bringing together community, nature, and rehabilitation right here in Bristol!

Local Church Pastor Osien Sibanda is one of Sixty-One's partners. Alongside delivering a Constructive Masculinity Course at HMP Bristol, as a trained beekeeper, Osien also runs the Bees Project at Bristol prison, teaching prisoners valuable skills in beekeeping, from understanding pollination and managing hives to processing different byproducts.

Now, in a joint venture between Chaplaincy, Pastor Osien and God’s House International, a community allotment has been secured - but it needs help to get started.

Osien's looking for volunteers to commit to just one session a month to help clear, weed, plant, and water the allotment.

Ready to get your hands dirty for a wonderful cause?

Please contact Pastor Osien at the following email address if you can lend a hand:

MentorMe Training

Over the last few weeks, the MentorMe team have been training and getting to know a new cohort of wonderful future mentors over the course of four training sessions.

Session 4 of the mentoring training regularly gets the best feedback - it's when we have the pleasure of hosting special guests from the frontline of our work, a mentor and a mentee, as they give our trainees a window into how a mentoring relationship really works and this pairing was no exception!

Meeting for over a year and having recently transitioned to befriending, M shared that mentoring had made the world of difference knowing that someone was there just for him, and on his side when no-one else was.

His mentor also described to trainees how well-resourced and supported she had felt during the mentoring stage, that she and her mentee had got so much from meeting and wanted to keep doing so as part of the wider 'family' of Sixty-One.

Could you give an hour of your time a week to supporting someone through mentoring?

Why not come along to our next taster session or our our next training course and find out more about what mentoring is and what it involves. Please contact info@sixty-one to register your place:

Wishing Esther all the best!

At the end of this month, we say a fond farewell to Esther as she takes up a new role within the Ministry of Justice. Esther joined Sixty-One back in in 2016. Her background as an Assistant Psychologist and Probation Service Officer at HMP Bristol led to a suggestion: train as a mentor with Sixty-One's MentorMe project – the rest is history!

“Driven by a passion for Criminal Justice and its people, I completed the MentorMe training, and was accepted as a mentor. A year later, I joined MentorMe as a Project Liaison Officer, going back once again into HMP Bristol. Eight years on, it's time to return to the civil service. My time at Sixty-One saw me become interim MentorMe manager, take on a new senior team role within the MentorMe project, and then lead the Hubs project. These eight years have been incredibly enriching, teaching me patience, grace, love, resilience, and the power of small victories.
Leaving Sixty-One, and the colleagues I count as friends (on June 26th), is bittersweet. However, this new opportunity allows me to hopefully influence prison staff and other departments of the Ministry of Justice directly through co-creating and facilitating training, continuing my commitment to a fairer system. Thank you to all of you who have been part of my journey of change over the past 9 years.”

We wish Esther all the very best in her new role, and look forward to keeping connected with her as she takes on this new challenge and continues to provide valuable support to people in the Criminal Justice System.

If you have general queries relating to hubs, please email and the team will be delighted to respond.
