Lead Play Worker: Sea Mills Community Initiatives
Sea Mills Community Initiatives (SMCI) is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Lead Play Worker to deliver weekly outreach ‘open access’ play sessions for children and young people aged between 4–16.
These sessions have been developed in partnership with The Scrapstore Bristol who will continue to offer training and support. Active sessions run Wednesdays after school (3:30–5:30pm) and during school holidays (excluding Christmas) on Wednesdays from 12:00–4:00pm on the Recreation ground in Sea Mills.
These sessions are held outdoors throughout the year, in all weather conditions. This role is physically active, rewarding, and central to supporting children’s right to play in an exciting, community-based environment.
As the Lead Play worker, you will be responsible for creating safe, inclusive, and stimulating play environments while building relationships with children, families, and the wider community.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Take the lead in delivering engaging and inclusive ‘open access’ year round play sessions in a local community space.
-
Manage and support a small team of dedicated play workers, including volunteers, who will work alongside you in your role.
-
Promote and support freely chosen play, while encouraging conflict resolution and applying a risk-benefit approach to play.
-
Use creativity and initiative to respond effectively to real-time challenges and needs that arise during play sessions.
-
Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with children, families, colleagues, schools, and other community stakeholders.
-
Prepare, organise, and maintain resources needed for each session, ensuring they are safely stored and ready for use.
-
Collect data and track session progress in line with funding and reporting requirements.
-
Support with the preparation and serving of food and snacks, especially during longer holiday sessions.
-
Ensure all children, regardless of ability or background, have access to meaningful play opportunities.
-
Act as a passionate advocate locally for children’s right to play and work with the SMCI team to develop this project to suit the needs of the community.
-
Uphold and promote the values and vision of Sea Mills Community Initiatives.
